Typography really is everywhere PDF Print E-mail

After much deliberation and design work, finally the art team at Whoartnow have come up with a delectable range of Typography based images for your viewing pleasure! As a new and trendy interior trend at the moment new waves of Typography art have hit the design world, from the simplest of ideas, to new takes on classic Typography based images, all the way to the most complex images built entirely from text, this style has taken the art world by storm.

So I hear you ask.... What is Typography?

Well Typography actually refers to the way in which text is displayed on a page, be it handwritten or a webpage, the use of Typography has become widely recognised as becoming an entirely different form of art all together. Not only is it used to make sure text is placed effectively and in accordance to the reason it was written, but it has now become a way of designing pieces of illustrated art using text as the focal point of the image itself.

Personally I think the use of type to build an image is not only a fantastic idea but gives the phrase "A picture means a thousand words" a whole new and more literal meaning. To be able to build an image entirely out of letters is not as easy as one might think, it takes time, effort and an accurate eye, unfortunately for me I did not realise this until it was my turn to have a go. I mean some Typography is relatively easy, well not easy as there is still a lot of thought over placement, colour, font and even size, but for the most part the simplest of Typography is easier than building images out of words! There is some real skill and time that goes into the more complex designs, I've had a go myself but even an as an artist and photographer the concept is still hard to grasp.

The two pieces of art (top right [SunPower Scenes] and left [Blooming Lovely]) both by Nancy Satta, are both fantastic examples of how text can be used to add both depth and texture to an image. The type integrated into the image gives the image so much more to look at, with images like these the striking bold colours and simple detail are set off perfectly by the contrasting white circus themed text. Clever uses of both font and phrasing means the art itself holds hidden meaning, in this case portrayed by the text itself.

Then on the opposite scale of Typography we have examples of more simple and to the point Typography art:

Here we have a few new takes on the classic Keep calm and carry on posters, ranging from a very British Keep calm.... Your on CCTV, all the way to a Sci-Fi lovers style Keep calm and use the force! There is a whole range of patriotic, funny and sensible versions of the Keep calm phrase available on the site. This is a massive trend at the moment, and the images can work almost anywhere in the home from the living area to the bathroom!! My favourite has to be Keep calm and make the tea, it's just so quintessentially British!!!

The above images, Fields of Promise, and Chrystal Clear again have incorporated text into the image but in a more subtle style. The text in these images continuously draws the eye in towards the image, begging for closer inspection, it is striking and yet at the same time so subtle it is almost unnoticeable. Again both images by Nancy Satta, done in her own iconic style.

In contrast to these you have images like New York Geographic and San Francisco Geographic range which instead of incorporating text into an image, it has in fact incorporated the image into the text.  A fun and effective way of making your type much more interesting, I suppose in images like the following you could say "A word holds a thousand images"!

A few other examples of ways Typography can be used can be seen with the following images:

Let's be Frank, A very different kind of Robin, 100 Percent, Letters of Love Triptych

So many different types of Typography to choose from, keep an eye out on the Typography range as we are forever updating the site to include new artwork. Check the range for all the designs mentioned.
